VitaGenics was founded by doctors and nutritionists as a result of treating countless patients with a variety of health conditions including Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes and Blood Sugar Imbalances. While we understand medications may be necessary; we also believe there are non-drug interventions, such as lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of diabetes and / or manage the condition you have developed. These lifestyle changes may include a balanced diet, exercise, reduction of stress, and nutritional supplements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key Terms to Understand:

  1. 1. Diabetes– Diabetes mellitus (MEL-ih-tus), or simply diabetes, is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defect in the body's ability to produce and/or use insulin.
    1. Pre-Diabetes – Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have "Pre-Diabetes" – blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Recent research has shown that some long-term damage to the body, especially the heart and circulatory system, may already be occurring during Pre-Diabetes.
    2. Type 1 Diabetes – Is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Only 5% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. With the help of insulin therapy and other treatments, even young children with type 1 diabetes can learn to manage their condition and live long, healthy, happy lives.
    3. Type 2 Diabetes – Is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can lead to diabetes complications.
  2. 2. Insulin – A hormone manufactured by the pancreas that goes from the blood stream into muscle, fat and liver cells where it can be utilized as fuel. Inside the pancreas, beta cells make the hormone insulin. With each meal, beta cells release insulin to help the body use or store the blood glucose it gets from food. In people with type 1 diabetes, the pancreas no longer makes insulin. The beta cells have been destroyed and they need insulin shots to use glucose from meals. People with type 2 diabetes make insulin, but their bodies don't respond well to it. Some people with type 2 diabetes need diabetes pills or insulin shots to help their bodies use glucose for energy. Insulin cannot be taken as a pill because it would be broken down during digestion just like the protein in food. It must be injected into the fat under your skin for it to get into your blood.
  3. 3. Glucose – A sugar that enters the blood-stream when food is digested. Glucose is the primary source of fuel (energy) for the body.
  4. 4. Insulin sensitivity / resistance – A decreased ability for the body to use insulin to remove glucose from the bloodstream. The body produces insulin, but does not utilize it well.
  5. 5. Blood glucose levels – The level of glucose in the bloodstream. People with insulin sensitivity / resistance will have higher levels of glucose in the bloodstream because of an impaired ability to remove it, which can lead to diabetes.
  6. 6. Metabolic Syndrome – Is a combination of high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, excess body fat around the waist or abnormal cholesterol levels. When they occur together this increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease or stroke.
